Dental Bridges

What are dental bridges ?

A bridge may be advised if you're missing one or more teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Bridges span the space where the teeth are missing. They are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space.

What type of material is used for dental bridges?

As with crowns, you have myriad choice of materials for bridges. Your dentist can help you decide which to use, based on the location of the missing tooth (or teeth), its function, aesthetic considerations and cost. Porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth.

How is the bridge fitted?

Bridges require at least 2/3 visits to the dentist .In the first visit space is made for the new crown. This preparatory work is done for fixed bridge. The dentist takes a mould of the teeth with the help of which the bridge is made. In the second visit the bridge is fitted and it is adjusted to get a correct bite. Once the patient is comfortable with the bridge it is permanently fixed.

What type of care is required after the bridge is fitted?

A strict dental hygiene regime has to be followed. Debris can get accumulated, as there is gap between and beneath the bridge i.e. the false teeth. The adjacent teeth require special care as the bridge rests on them .If regular cleaning and flossing is not done the teeth may fall off. Special tools are there to clean difficult areas & the dentist can help you use them.

What is the alternative to dental bridges?

Alternative to bridges is dentures/ implants.
